I wasn't able to find a FreeBMD record of the birth of John E Thomas in 1880 in Sussex, however, I did find a John E Griffiths: Births Jan-Mar 1880 Griffiths, John Edward Westhampnett RD, Sussex, 2b 413 (Westhampnett is quite close to Chichester) I wonder if the two children in the 1881 census were really children of Margaret's previous marriage, and were recorded as Thomas to disguise the fact that Margaret was not actually married to John Thomas at the time?
