BT124/15 (from Reg Davies 23-1-2000. Nicholas Bate while captain of Leader was discharged on 29 Oct 1878 at sea, the ship being abandoned. The ship was since picked up and brought to London.

Ben Ledi (s) Laing Newport to Venice, coal put in with bows damaged and fore compartment full of water, having collided at 3.30 am with schooner Leader (of Fowey) which foundered, one of crew drowned.

17 Dec 1.22 pm Leader of Swansea (not Fowey), zinc in cakes London for Swansea foundered after collision 15th 20 miles N of St Ives.

24.08 x 6.1 x 3.35 GT 108 zinc ore built 1858, cr 5 CL1 Cp Bate, N ACD 1B
Collision 3 a.m. on a
Sunday with ss Ben Ledi of N Shiels from Newport to Med.
Steamer struck schooner
on starboard bow cutting her down. Cpt,
mate & 2 men jumped on the steamer's deck, but a lad named Peters,
belonging to Devoran was lost, & was thought to have been killed in the
collision. On reaching Falmouth on eve
of 19-12 the survivors were landed & taken to Sailors home. The Ben Ledi had a hole in the bow & had
to be repaired.
At BoT enquiry neither
master was at fault, entire blame for careless navigation being placed on
Nathaniel Steele chief officer of Ben Ledi whose certificate was cancelled.
