Death

Date of death from tombstone.

Note

Sydney served in the 1st Battalion B Company of the Lincolnshire Regiment. In fact he joined the army some years before the Great War, as according to the 1911 Findmypast census records he was serving in Aden in 1911.

His regiment were mobilised on Day 1 of the war (4th August) at Aulnoye-Aymieres in northern France, and went immediately to Mons. On 19 September he was reported as "Missing" on the War Office Casualty List (Ref: DT31101914) and this was amended on 9 March 1915 to "Previously reported missing now reported Prisoner of War" (Ref: DT27031915). In fact a later record (ref: PA 20307, ICRC Archives) reveals that he had been captured on 24 August 1914 during the battle of Mons. Nothing more is known about him until 11 Feb 1918, when he was transferred from Czersk (in modern Poland) to Chemnitz in Saxony. The last record about his war service states that he was released from the POW camp in Germany and arrived in England 14 January 1919 (ref: NLS 1919_Wlist77).

The ICRC record gives his date of birth as 17 Sep 1890, which we know is wrong - he seems to have made a habit of changing it over the years! - and his place of birth as Mortimer, which fits OK. He gave the address of his next of kin as Carpenters Arms, Mortimer.
