| Note | In the military papers of Ernest Alfred at Ancestry.co.uk there is a document which Ernest's wife Minnie Amelia had to fill in in order to receive her War Widow's pension which provides some family information. Thus it is revealed that: 1. Ernest's father's name was Alfred John Lovelock, for whom no address was quoted. 2. His mother's name (at the time the form was completed in 1919) was Annie Ching (NOT, note, Annie Ching Lovelock - so that the CWGC records are actually in error), living in Hurstbourne Tarrant. 3. Ernest had three half brothers and two half sisters named Ching aged 28, 21,15, 18 and 17 respectively. 4. Although Minnie recorded that Ernest had no blood uncles or aunts, she did state that he had four nephews aged 58, 53, 47 and 49, all with the surname Dewey. In 1891 he was at Ibthorp (another hamlet associated with Hurstbourne Tarrant) with his grandfather Jesse Dewey. Next door was the family of Henry Ching, including a son Henry aged 19. In 1901 in Ibthorpe were Henry Ching, 29, wife Ann, 42, and two children, one of whom is Francis Henry aged 3. Minnie Lovelock had recorded Francis Henry Ching (aged 21 in 1919) as a half-brother of Ernest Alfred. Therefore it is concluded that Ernest Alfred was an illegitimate son of Alfred John Lovelock and Ann Dewey, who decided at some point to use Lovelock as his surname. Alfred John married Ellen Julia Harrell somewhere in the Devizes RD in Jan-Mar 1884, so it is understandable that Minnie did not enter an address for him when she completed that form in 1919. She does not seem to have been challenged by officialdom in respect of her omission, although the form was returned to her at some stage because when originally submitted she had failed to get it endorsed by the likes of a magistrate or minister of religion. |
