| Shared note | 16-Aug-07: Hester was a distant cousin who had taken care of Mary Anne during her failing health. 3-Sep-07 I located the 1871 census showing Hester in the household of John and Jane Colley in Wootton Rivers. Also in that household is Shadrach Colley (and his wife Mary). So I have the definative relationship of three generations. That proof would make Hester the niece of Ellen and the 1st cousin of the man she later married, Frederick James Spicer Lovelock. Elizabeth Price email 10-Sep-07: The 1871 census lists Hester as being 6 years old, born in WR. She is recorded as being the head of household's daughter. Head is John Colley. There is an Ester listed in the Baptismal records for Wootton Rivers. Ester was baptised 29 May, 1864, daughter of John and Jane Colley. I'm no expert on English dialect (though not bad at texican), but some of my Wiltshire relatives do drop their "H". So, I'm thinking Ester might be Hester in the parish records. By 1881, only Emily, Miriam, Greta, William, Frances and Virtue were in the household with John and Jane. Hester was a servant by then in the household of William Dearlove in Reading. Her name is spelled Hester Colly on the census, she is listed as a general servant, age 17 from Savernake and unmarried. |
