Christening | 22 September 1846 Shared note: James: James: The following baptism (Lieflock line) is also listed under Burbage and is the dau. of David L and Martha Yeates. Presumably it should be one or the other. 1846 Sep 22 Elizabeth daughter of David and Martha Lovelock of Burbage, Abode Pewsey Union Workhouse. Robert: Well spotted James. I suspect it should be under Burbage. Perhaps Graham can confirm. Graham: I have no record in my notes of this one being duplicated at Burbage. I believe it belongs under Pewsey, as that is where it took place. I can't think why the incumbent noted that they were "of Burbage" when they were abiding in the Workhouse, unless this was to avoid giving the impression that the parents considered the Workhouse as a permanent residence, which I'm sure they didn't, and which would certainly not be in keeping with the attitude of the Guardians. |

Marriage | Edwin Waters — View this family 11 December 1875 (Age 29 years) Ken Gigg has marriage cert., Graham Lovelock has a copy. Notes by Graham Lovelock: At the birth of daughter Martha the family were living at Chisbury Lane, Little Bedwyn. (from birth cert. obtained by Ken Gigg, Graham has a copy). The 1891 Census entry shows them in Little Bedwyn, living in CHISBURY LANE Graham Lovelock, email 21-Jun-05: The 'mysterious' Emily Waters is in fact Emily Caroline Harris, the wife of Timothy, married to him in the Hungerford RD in 4Q 1900 (ref 2c 591). At the same time her sister Blanche Lucy Harris, three years her elder, married Alfred Edward Greenaway. You'll find them at Little Bedwyn in 1881, when both girls were declared to have been born at Chisbury, Little Bedwyn. The explanation for some more of the 1901 entry is that Joseph and Timothy were the sons of Charles, confirmed by the Stitchcombe 1881 entry. Albert was possibly a grandson of Charles, perhaps Edwin and the elder John were brothers or cousins of Charles. Martha and the younger John were of course the children of Edwin and Elizabeth. [...in] the 1881 Birch Copse entry: how is it that Eliza WELLS is quoted as the mother of Edwin? I hope it's just a simple (!) matter of her being widowed twice. Well, an Eliza Waters did marry a William Wells in the Hungerford RD in 1Q 1866, and a 77 year old William Wells died in the Hungerford RD in the self same quarter! Bad luck or what? Or am I on the wrong track, as she would have been only 38 or 39 in 1866. Such a disparity in ages would have caused the lifting of some eyebrows I should think. There are a number of candidate deaths of a male Waters between Edwin's birth and 1866, one of whom - John Waters, died 4Q 1864 - could have married an Eliza Aldridge in 4Q 1838. Lastly, Edwin's age in 1901 should of course have been 54 not 53. |
