Our transcription shows several differences vis-a-vis that of findmypast (fmp) for example, which reflect other data in our possession concerning several members of the household, which fmp would not have considered, and certain 'idiosyncracies' in the way the Head of the Household completed the form:

Mary Annie Sheppard's stated age at death (73) concurs with her stated age (69) in the 1911 Census entry - perhaps via the same informant being involved - whereas her stated age in 1901 (58) implies a different year of birth.

(Other possible sources of data on her [see the 'General' note above] would suggest that she may have been born as early as 1837 or as late as 1845.)

Note

We first thought (with what seemed good reason - i.e. the 1901 Census entry) that Mary Annie Sheppard was Amy Maud's mother, but reference to the Note to Amy Maud Sheridan (I3272) will show how we came to think otherwise.

The question thus arises whether the Mary Anne Sheppard who married Charles Henry Sheridan in 1893 had been married previously or was born Sheppard, on which matter we have found only the following inconclusive pieces of data:

  • There is no registered birth of a Mary Sheppard in Berkshire 1840/50.

  • There is an unmarried Mary A Sheppard, 46, born Newbury, Berks, in the Earl of Dartmouth's household in Staffs in 1891 (implying dob 1844/5).

  • There is a Mary Ann Sheppard birth registered in Newbury RD Jul-Sep quarter of 1837 (ref 6, 163); she would have been 63 in 1901 and 73 in 1911. (This seems likely to be: 1841: Mary Sheppard, 4, Bartholomew St, Newbury, with 7 other Sheppards, presumed to be her parents, 3 siblings, the father's younger brother and their mother (Mary's paternal grandmother). 1851: same family, still in Bartholomew St, 8 living children, including a 13-yr-old Mary, occupation 'Servant', but now without HoH's mother and brother.)

  • No such Mary found in 1861 or 1871, but in 1881 there's a Mary Ann Sheppard aged 43, born Newbury, Berks, Nurse Domestic Servant at Hungerford Park House, the residence of a Lieutenant Colonel George S [?] Welles [or Wallis perhaps].

  • Death of a Mary A Sheppard in Newbury RD Oct-Dec quarter of 1919 (ref 2c, 270) aged 82; possibly the Mary born 1837 (and in those other entries), having never married and having either stayed in the town all her life or returned there, possibly from/via Hungerford Park.

  • 'Alternatively': 1881, Mile End Old Town, Charles J and Mary A Sheppard (37, born Berks); possibly the Charles John Sheppard and Mary Ann Webb who married in Bethnal Green RD, Oct-Dec quarter of 1874 (ref 1c, 485), and there was a Mary Ann Webb born in the Newbury RD in the Oct-Dec quarter of 1840 (ref 6, 204). However, there's a Charles John Sheppard death in Wandsworth RD, Oct-Dec quarter of 1889 (ref 1d, 323), aged 42, whereas in the 1881 Mile End image Charles's age looks like 27. There's also a Mary Ann Webb death in Newbury RD, Jan-Mar quarter of 1842 (ref 6, 151) - too early for an age to be shown; no Mary (A[nn]) Webb born Newbury and aged about 10 anywhere in 1851.
