The marriage record for Eliza Lovelock to John Jordan gives John's father's name as Thomas, not James |
Marriage | Note from Carol King: At her second marriage (to James Smart, aged 23) Eliza is recorded as widow, aged 33. They all (James, Eliza and 3 children) appear on 1871 census, also with just Thomas on the 1881 census. In 1891 it's just Eliza & James. By 1901 there is Eliza a widow with 2 grandchildren Henry J Smart & Elizabeth Stagg, Note from Graham Lovelock: [In the 1901 census] next door her daughter Emma Jordan was a servant for Thomas Deadman. Not surprising, therefore, that Emma was the one to register her mother's death. I presume Elizabeth Stagg is the daughter of William Stagg and Elizabeth Jordan |

Shared note | Graham Lovelock: Frederick James was baptised at Burbage on 20 Feb 1859 and Silas and Ellen (Eleanor) were still living there in 1861, but did not have FJ with them. I didn't find him anywhere else, but presumably he is out there to be found. In 1871 he was in Frog Lane in WR with John and Eliza Deadman, and is recorded as their nephew. Thus I deduce that Eliza Deadman must have been born Eliza Lovelock. She was born in WR and her age was recorded as 47. The only candidate seems to be Eliza the daughter of John L and Elizabeth Hillier, bap at WR in 1822. We have her marrying John Jordan in 1845, but she could easily have remarried before 1871. Free BMD does not seem to have a candidate death or remarriage, alas. However, this is only likely to result in a nonsense: if Eliza is Frederick James' aunt, she must be Silas' sister. I think this must have something to do with Eliza's mother being Elizabeth Hillier, and Silas' mother being Hannah Hillier. By my reckoning Eliza and FJ would be second cousins twice removed, and I can quite understand that the enumerator didn't get told that! With Eliza being so much older than FJ I can imagine that he referred to her by the courtesy title of 'aunt'. Note (James Loveluck): I haven't yet entered this marriage, which is somewhat conjectural. Note (James Loveluck) that this conjecture turned out to probably be incorrect. 27-Jan-06: Email from James Loveluck to Graham Lovelock and Robin Lovelock: Summary of past episodes: (1) Frederick James Spicer Lovelock (bap Burbage 20 Feb 1859) was found in the 1871 census living with John and Eliza Deadman at WR. Graham had speculated that Eliza Deadman must have been born Eliza Lovelock, and the only candidate was Eliza L bap 25 Dec 1822 at WR, dau of John L & Elizabeth Hillier, the connection between Frederick James Spicer L being via the Hilliers (James L, grandfather of Frederick James Spicer L married Elizabeth Hillier's sister Hannah). (2) The problem with this proposal is that Eliza previously married John Jordan 8 Nov 1845 at WR. Graham speculated that said John Jordan may have died, and Eliza remarried John Deadman. (3) In an email 23-Jan-06 Robin Lovelock provided more census data indicating links between the Lovelocks, Deadmans and Colleys, including the fact that John and Eliza Deadman were already married at the time of the 1851 census, just 5/6 years after the above Eliza L married John Jordan. This seems to scupper Graham's theory about Eliza L remarrying John Deadman. So I decided to have another look at FreeBMD for the marriage of John Deadman (at the time, Graham didn't find the marriage in FreeBMD, but of course there is much more data available now). This turned up the following: Marriages Dec 1850 Colley Eliza Pewsey 8 769 Colley William Pewsey 8 769 Coster Hester Pewsey 8 769 Deadman John Pewsey 8 769 So it looks as if John Deadman married Eliza Colley, presumably a sister of Ellen Colley, who married Silas Spicer Lovelock. So this would make Eliza ... the aunt of Frederick James Spicer Lovelock Note from Carol King: .. vital records [...] gives her christening as 1822, whereas her second marriage in 1857 records her age as 33 and in 1902 her age is given as 77, census returns very from 1822-1825. |
