The Lieflock Line, Wootton Rivers and Tangley Trees

Note: It was originally thought that Milicent Fribbence might alternatively have married Richard bp 1800 s of William Lovelock & Elizabeth Newman.

Family appear in 1851 census: Richard head age 42 born Great Bedwyn, Mary daughter age 12, Richard son age 3 born Great Bedwyn (Not listed in Vital Records CDs for Great Bedwyn in years 1841-1885), Amelia wife age 39, Daniel age 6 son born Great Bedwyn (Not listed in Vital Records CDs for Great Bedwyn in years 1841-1885), Fanny daughter aged 1 born Great Bedwyn (Not listed in Vital Records CDs for Great Bedwyn in years 1841-1885), James aged 9 son born Great Bedwyn, Thomas aged 14 son born Great Bedwyn and Charles aged 16 son born Great Bedwyn. No mention of John.

It would therefore appear that Milicent did not marry this Richard unless Milicent and Amelia are the same person or Richard re-married. There is no Milicent Lovelock listed in the 1851 census.

Notes from Graham Lovelock: Amelia is Millicent Fribbence, and therefore the Richard you ask about is the son of Thomas L and Sarah (nee DUDMAN). I will admit it's a little easier to appreciate if you have the various Census Returns and a map to hand. I can place Richard and Millicent for you in every Census from 1841 to 1881, and her in 1891 (Richard having died by then).

Lucy Hill might also have married William bp 1789 s. John L & Sarah Batt or William bp 1796 s of Richard L & Elizabeth or even William bp 1790 son of William & El.izabeth Newman.

Found William and family in 1851 census (Nimrod Index) resident Great Bedwyn aged 42, head, born Great Bedwyn and his wife Lucy age 37 born Easton Royal together with their children, Charles aged 5 born Great Bedwyn, Ellen 3 years born Great Bedwyn, George 15 years born Great Bedwyn, John 13 years born Great Bedwyn and Maria (Hannah Maria) aged 10 born Great Bedwyn. No sign of Frederick or Mary Ann.

Gwen has additional children of first marriage: Charles (bn 1851) and Emily (bn 1857) plus second marriage to Ann Andrews in 1861 and two additional children, Henrietta (bn 1862) and Frederick (bn 1863). Graham is descended through Frederick.

BVR shows wife's name as Choules, husband as Lovelocke.

Notes from Robert Sterry received in email dated 25 Jan 1999

Located George Lovelock and his family resident in Great Bedwyn in 1851 census: George, head, aged 34 (a bit out), born Great Bedwyn, his wife Eliza, born Great Bedwyn aged 22 and his son George aged 10 born Great Bedwyn. Their daughter Elizabeth bp 1839 is not listed as living at this address. Additional children not previously located in PRs are:

Ann , aged 1 month born Great Bedwyn and Charlotte aged 5 born Great Bedwyn.

This detail does not support the baptism of Eliza Fisher on Nov 2, 1817 found in Burbage PR, daughter of Stephen and Eliza Fisher, unless Eliza Fisher died and George remarried another Eliza. If he did remarry, he did not marry in Great Bedwyn. (Not located in Vital Records Index)

Notes by Graham Lovelock:

I believe I first found George and Eliza in 1851, as so many of the 1841 films are really hard to decipher. According to my records they were at West Grafton, and their ages were given as 34 and 32, hence the deduction that Eliza was born in 1819 (possibly 1818). The piece in parentheses appears in my database, but could never have been captured in a file constructed on Lieflock Line lines.

I subsequently found them at West Grafton in 1861 (ages 44 and 33), in 1871 (ages 52 and 41), and in Great Bedwyn in 1881 (ages 64 and 51). By 1891 George had died and Eliza was recorded back at West Grafton aged 59. She gave her place of birth as Great Bedwyn in 1851 and 1881, but West Grafton on the other three occasions.

When the 1841 data was eventually added to the record it did help a little: the couple were at West Grafton living with Eliza's parents, which is how we know her mother's name was Ann. Eliza's age was recorded as 23 (not rounded up or down).

Some considerable time later I ventured into the East Grafton PRs, hunting down some completely separate Lovelocks, and that is when I discovered the burial of Eliza No 1 in 1844 and the marriage to Eliza No 2 in 1846. It seemed most unlikely, but there it was. Eliza No 2 was 18 at the time of the marriage, so I have probably mis-read the 1851 entry. That seems odd, as with George being 34, I had an example of the Enumerator's rendering of a 3. Perhaps someone will go back and check this some time.

James Concerning the illegitimate children living with George and Eliza (in the 1871 census record), I believe that Ann(ie) is the mother of William - there is a baptism record for him at East Grafton as follows: 1871 Jun 25 William son of Ann Lovelock (single woman)

Graham email 5 Nov 2004: I've not been able to find any information to help place her. There does not seem to be a baptism anywhere, although she does appear in the GRO data (1Q of 1865). Presumably she was not another daughter of Ann's, as Ann would only have been 14 in 1865, so she must be the daughter of one of Ann's older sisters Elizabeth and Charlotte.

I can't see any mention of her in 1881, but may have missed it. There is no death in our GRO data, but there is a marriage of a Sarah Ann in the Hungerford RD in 2Q of 1886.

James 19-Jan-07 Concerning the second illegitimate child living with George & Eliza in 1871, there is a FreeBMD birth record as follows: Births Mar 1865: Lovelock,Sarah Ann, Hungerford, 2c, 262 However, It's not clear who was the mother of Sarah Ann.

Died in Marlborough, Bridewell Gaol.

Ken Gigg has death cert.

Graeme Moad has George died in Willunga, South Australia, Age: 51. Tombstone gives the date of death as 4 December 1853.
