Shared note

James Loveluck: Concerning the family of Henry L & Ruth Hicks, it's rather odd that the 1901 census has Henry b. abt. 1873, which doesn't correspond with the 1871 or 1881 census data, or with the FreeBMD birth of a Henry L 2Q 1864 in Hungerford RD. Maurice Carne has recorded the 1873 birth date for Henry, presumably taken from the 1901 census data. There doesn't seem to be a FreeBMD birth for a Henry L in 1873. Furthermore the 1901 census data records the year of birth of Henry's wife Ruth as 1877, which would have made her 13 at the time of their marriage in 1890, and 14 at the birth of their dau Edith.

Graham Lovelock's reply: I really ought to have commented here. The trouble with the 1901, or indeed most of the material on line, is that it has been transcribed at least twice, and we don't actually know whether any of the transcriptions have been checked. It's difficult to understand how Henry's age of 36 or 37 could be read as 28 without the raw material in front of one. I took the line that the more or less consistent results from Free BMD and the '71 and '81 Censuses was a more sensible approach.

With respect to Ruth Hicks I agree the situation looks even more ridiculous. There is a possible alternative, but it's not conclusive. A Ruth Hicks was born in 4Q 1873, which would make her 16 at marriage - just about credible. Trouble is, that birth was in the Wallingford RD, whereas Aldworth, where she claims to have been born, is in the Wantage RD. A border question, perhaps? Free BMD does not have the birth of her daughter Edith G transcribed, although there is an Edith Lizzie in 4Q 1890 in the Bradfield RD. If that is the right entry then that may explain the early marriage - a hint of the shotgun! All a bit messy, but then I guess we are used to that.
