Note | Thomas enlisted in the Army on 15 Oct 1857 and was discharged on 30 Jul 1860. His discharge papers note 'Suffering from mental imbecility which first became apparent to his comrades in February 1860 on his return from Darjeeling where he had been invalided for an ulcer on the leg. While on the march down he was said to have suffered from sun-stroke.' |
Note | Based on an article in 'The Salisbury Times' of 5 May 1877: On 5 May 1877 an inquest was held at Nunton before Mr Wilson, on the body of Thomas Lovelock, a pensioner who was found drowned in the Avon, about 300 yards from Longford Castle, on the morning of 4 May. A cousin of Thomas, with whom he lodged at Newton Toney, stated that she last saw him at 20 minutes to 6 on the morning of the 10th of April, when he was going to Salisbury to take his pension. He was discharged from the army in consequence of his having had a sunstroke and his left arm was paralysed. He was generally very dull in his habits but always said he should not do away with himself. He had collected his pension money, £2, 5s, 6d, at 10 o’clock on the 10th of April, at the “Wheatsheaf” in Salisbury, but had only 17s 10d on him when found. The verdict returned was, “Found drowned, but by what means is unknown.” |
