Provided by Alan Whitaker by email 30 May 2003 Citation details: Marriages Mar 1873 Lovelock, Charles, Highworth 5a 9 Quality of data: primary evidence Shared note: Between 1871 and 1881, Charles also met and married Bertha Hulance, who came from a family of Stone Masons in Alderton, a village in Wiltshire, which, as far as I can see, had no street names, only house numbers. They lived at 10, Alderton Village. After first living in Liversage Street, the family moved to 45, Canal Street, Derby between the 1881 and 1891 census. These houses were known to have been built specifically for employees of The Midland Railway. Charles and Bertha were living in a modern house, at a reasonable rent and he had a very good job as a signalman. Verbal family history tells us he worked in Derby N Signal box, (5 Arches). In July 1881 Derby Station expanded considerably with 3 additional platforms. The first box was to control the goods line and access to the Loco Works to the east of the station and was called Engine Sidings. In July 1881, the signalling in the station itself was renewed. Derby Station, track and platforms grew rapidly. On 25th September 1892, Derby North Junction Box was renewed, followed on October 9th by Derby Junction and Derby Station North. There was an incredible growth in the very high tech. Midland Railway Company which included jobs and housing. This was working in 'Rocket Science'. Is this why Charles came to Derby - for all those opportunities?

Marriage | John Lovelock and his wife Ann lived at 14, Hodges Cottages, Shipton Moyne. Both were agricultural workers, possibly for an estate. In 1851, their daughter Mary Ann was at home looking after the rest of the family. Thomas, at the age of 13 was also working as an agricultural labourer. The family continued to grow, and by 1871, Charles was working as a coachman. It looks as though John died in 1874, and the family had to give up their home in Shipton Moyne. Perhaps it was a tied cottage. |
