Note | An item in 'The Worcester Herald' of 13 July 1833 reads: "MIDSUMMER SESSIONS - At Shrewsbury, Thomas Venables and Jane Moat, two notorious vagabonds from Staffordshire, who had been in the habit of attending different fairs and markets for the purpose of picking up flats, were convicted of robbing W. Boydell, a drover, of twenty sovereigns, at Newport, and sentenced to seven years' transportation." Thomas was transported on the 'Hive', leaving Portsmouth on 15 Jan 1834 and arriving in Port Jackson on 11 Jun 1834. However, Dianne Snowdon reports that this man died on 13 Jun 1834, so there must have been another Thomas. |
