Note | An article in the 'South London Journal' of Saturday 18 February 1865 reported: 'On Tuesday evening an inquest was held at Mr Sharp's, Eagle Villa, Upper Sydenham, touching the death of Lewis Charles Lovelock, aged four years and five months. The Coroner (C Carttar, Esq.) having arrived the jury were sworn, Mr Lyon being elected foreman. By the evidence of Mr Sharpe it appeared that on the previous Thursday the child and his mother arrived at his residence from Dalston, for the purpose of stopping at Sydenham for a few days, and on the following morning, hearing the child scream, he ran upstairs and found the boy on the bed in flames. He (Mr Sharpe) instantly put the flames out and went for Dr Stutter. There was in the room the remains of a night light, and it is supposed that the child, in getting out of bed, must have reached over the lamp and ignited his dress. Dr Stutter was in attendance, and gave his evidence as to the cause of death, the child having lingered until Sunday. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death."' |
