Notes by Allen Blethyn in email 8 Jan 2003:

The schoolhouse mentioned in the 1841 census is next to Penllergaer House, which is the family home of the gentry Llewellyn family, who are related to the Talbot family of Margam Park.

Shared note

According to the letter of Dr. John D. Thomas dated 23 January 1978, John Loveluck Marendaz had a brush with the law in 1843. This is mentioned in an article by Leslie Evans in the "Transactions of the Port Talbot Historical Society", pages 108-110, year Bef. 1978:

It seems likely that the John Loveluck Marendaz, a traveller for the Evan Evans' Brewery at Neath, who embezzled his employer's money in 1843, was a brother to Francis (Morgannwg, ix, 40, 57), and, if so, it would appear that David Emmanuel Marendaz, Snr., had married a member of the Loveluck family of Margam.

Capt DMK Marendaz (g grandson of D.E. Marendaz junior) was obviously embarrassed by this wayward ancestor, since in a reply to Leslie Evans' article he wrote:

"No one of my family have heard of another son or John Lovelock Marendaz, nether has any descendants ever been heard of such a man, or his place of baptism, marriage or burial"

28-Oct-05: Ron Davies obtaned the full text of this newspaper article, which confirms that John Loveluck Marendaz was sentenced to imprisonment for one month with hard labour (and one week of solitary confinment!)
