1901 census record records Mary Ann (n e Howell) age 35 (b. 1865/66) born "Bullegar"

"Bullegar" doesn't seem to exist in Glam. A Google search turned up some correspondence from Ron Davies on the Glam mailing list:

Penllergaer (in Llangyfelach) became Penllegar on the original sheet and the transcriber took the Pen to be Bu - not unreasonable looking at the original image! But try finding something like that - with or without 'wild cards'! Still plenty of detective work required - fortunately!! Could anyone please suggest which parish/village the 1901 Census enumerator may have been referring to with 'Glamorgan Bullegar' - as the place of birth in the 1860's of someone I had assumed to have been born in the Bridgend area? Thanks in advance for any ideas, Best regards, Ron

So Bullegar should be Penllergaer (in Llangyfelach), which supports nmy idea that Mary Ann Howell is the daughter of Rees Howell and Elizabeth Powell, born Llangyfelach 1866 - see Ron's Web site I2136.

I sent mail to Ron 9-Oct-07: "... I had another look at the family, already in my database, of William Griffith Loveluck (I622 in my database) and Mary Ann Howell. I have her born about 1866, died about Mar 1956 Bridgend RD (the latter from a FreeBMD record). The date of birth was deduced from her age (90) at her death in 1956. Currently I don't have any information on her parents. I looked at your Web site and saw that you have her (I303 on your site) born about 1861, which doesn't agree with the above. In addition, I have a transcript of the 1901 census record for the family at New House, Pyle, RG13 5051 F77 P18, in which her age is given as 35, which again agrees with a birth date of 1865/66. Her place of birth is given as 'Bullegar' which I couldn't find in Glamorgan. I did a Google search on it, and what did I find ... an exchange on the Glam mailing list in Aug 2002 involving Ron Davies, who concluded that the place name was really Penllergaer (in Llangyfelach).

So I looked for other candidates for the Mary Ann Howell who married William Griffith Loveluck, and found on your Web site a Mary Ann Howell (I2136 on your site) born 1866 at Llangyfelach, daughter of Rees Howell and Elizabeth Powell (daughter of Rees(c) Powell). She seems to fit the known facts pretty well, and you don't currently have a spouse for her. So this would be yet another (indirect) link between the Loveluck and Powell families! What do you think? "

I have just checked back through my records and found the e-mail exchange via the Glam List, but can't imagine how I failed to connect her to Rees HOWELL & family at the time. My guess is that in August 2002 I had not yet found the marriage of Elizabeth POWELL, nor added the family detail [...] I have just checked a few more details: 1. The 1891 census for William Griffith LOVELUCK and Mary Ann (RG12 Pc-4456 Fo-55 Pg-15) shows Mary Ann's place of birth as "Gorseion" [presumably Gorseinon] 2. The 1871 census for Rees HOWELL and family - some 5 years after Mary Ann's birth - shows them in "Penderry Higher Hamlet", Llangyfelach. On the next page of the census are "Penllergaer Mansion" followed by several entries for "Gorseinon", so there seems little doubt that your conclusion is correct."
