Martha was the second-eldest of four children of Henry Wiltshire by his first wife, Martha Ball. Her grandparents were William Wiltshire and Martha Marshman, founders of the Strict Baptist chapel in Studley, Nr. Calne. It appears that she first came into Jenkin Davies' life in 1854, when she attended his marriage to her sister Anne in Merthyr Mawr. They were brought together again by their shared grief following Anne's death in childbirth only a year later. Their relationship evolved and they made their lives together, but were unable to marry because the law of the time forbade a man from marrying his deceased wife's sister. Probably to resolve this problem, they moved away from South Wales to Englefield in Berkshire, where they presented themselves as a married couple, and where they remained, farming Wickcroft Farm, for over thirty years, raising a family of fourteen children. Martha's address at time of death was given as Clapcot, Park House (Wallingford). NB George and three of the sisters are living at Park Farm, Wallingford in 1901.
