| Shared note | Esther is said to have walked from Magor to Neath Hiring Fair, where she was taken on as a servant for Sker House. Her mistress Margaret Morgan presented her with an inscribed Bible. Esther was a large woman, over six feet in height and weighing, so we are told 'about eighteen stones'. She cleaned Maudlam Church, (wearing a man's cap), and afterwards would enjoy a pint of stout at the Angel Inn opposite. She also acted as the local midwife and 'laid out' the dead of the parish. |
