Shared note | Joined the Merchant Navy as a boy apprentice in March 1900 (at the age of 16). Was apprenticed to James David THOMSON of the port of Glasgow. Presumably overseas for the 1901 census - no sign of him. Completed his four-year apprenticeship "in a most creditable way" and was discharged from the indenture on 28 March 1904. Returned to live in Bridgend , and was still there in 1908, but by 1909 had emigrated to Australia, on on 8 May 1909 he married Louisa Mary CHESSELL in Melbourne. Lived and worked in Melbourne for at least two years, and his son Rhys was born there. Joined the Navy and served through the First World War; discharged in Brisbane in 1918. He and Lousia lived there for some time and their son Owen was born there. Returned to Melbourne where William worked as a stevedore. Then in 1922 set off around Australia as an entrpreneur, buying run-down hotels, grocery stores, newsagents, etc., building them up and selling them again. Joined the Navy again - this time commissioned - in the Second World War. Later worked in Perth. Retired to Fremantle, W.A. |
