Shared note | Farmed Llanmihangel Mill (there in 1841 and 1845) From The Cambrian 19 Oct 1844 Court Proceedings: "John HUMPHREYS, 27, miller, was charged with having stolen one spirit level, the property of Mr. James POWELL, of Llanfihangel Mill, Margam. Prosecutor stated that, on missing the article in question, he procured a warrant, which he put into the hands of a constable who found the articles in the prisoner's house. The prisoner, in cross-examining witness, asked him if he had not had frequent possession of his (prisoner's) tools, and whether he, as well as prisoner himself, were not engaged in constructing a machine, with a view to discovering "perpetual motion?" (Laughter). To both of which witness gave answers in the affirmative. The defence was that the article had been borrowed with the intention of returning it. Verdict - Guilty. Sentenced to six weeks imprisonment with hard labour. Counsel for the prosecution, Mr. TRIPP." |
