Form Ron Davies' message 31-Aug-08:
"Rees' daughter Frances married a chap by the name of Richard Cox GOUGH, the founder of Gough's Cave in Cheddar, and they brought up a large family in Cheddar. Their descendants still own the cave and the associated flourishing tourist business. GOUGH's uncle George COX founded the other major site there - Cox's Cave - also the Cliffs Hotel, so between them, the family had the Cheddar tourist business pretty well wrapped up!
Amongst the impressive stalactites and stalagmites one of the major discoveries in Gough's Cave, was "Cheddar Man" - Britain's oldest complete human skeleton dating from approx. 7150BC.
So no less than four POWELL descendants, sons of Frances Jones POWELL and Richard Cox GOUGH, had the rather unusual occupation of "Cave Guide" in the 1901 census, whilst their father was listed a s "Cave Proprietor"! "
