William's first wife, Margaret, died in the second quarter of 1871. The death is recorded in the Cardiff registration district, so it is possible that she and William had already moved to Stocklands, St.Fagans, or perhaps that she died in Penmark - her home parish - I have ordered the certificate to confirm. Some six months later, William married 17-year-old Sarah Thomas, who had been working for him as a dairy maid. They had three children together before Sarah died, aged only 26, of scepticaemia, shortly after the birth of their third child.
