Open Questions concerning Loveluck Family History

  1. Where was John Loveluck (1740-1803) born?
  2. Where were the first two children of John L (1740-1803) born/baptised? There are no Glamorgan baptism records for John L (b abt 1768) and Ann L (born abt 1769). Dr John D Thomas surmises that John L returned to Wilts./Berks and that these two children were born there.
  3. How, if at all, is "Fragment 15" of the collected fragments (Clifford Loveluck, Cardiff branch) related to the Kenfig branch?
[Update 17-Jan-2003: Further investigation of the Cardiff branch (with help from Catherine Lovelock and BTs transcribed by Robert Sterry) indicates that it has its origins in Lyneham and Cherhill Wilts, going back to George Lovelock b: 1785, Cherhill, Lyneham, Wilts, England, d: 3 Jan 1874, Lyneham Wilts, England. No link to the Kenfig/Margam Lovelucks has been found yet. See the updated Fragment15]
  4. Why did James Courtis L (1866-1913) move from Glamorgan to E. Lancs. and what did he do for a living?
  5. In the Abbey Church of St Mary, Margam, there is a grave with the inscription "In memory of Catherine, the Wife of David Emmanuel Marendaz, of this Parish, who died July 11th 1836". D.E. Marendaz senior (1752-1834) married Ann Loveluck (1769-1834), while D.E. Marendaz junior married Catherine (née Powell), but according to Leslie Evans' article "The Marendaz and Thomas Families of Glamorgan" she died 4 Mar 1893, and this is consistent with census records for 1881 and 1891 which show her still living at Ty Draw farm. Could it be that D.E. Marendaz snr. re-married a Catherine after the death of Ann in 1834?
  6. The above mentioned gravestone also refers to Jenkin Bevan, who married Mary, dau. of William Powell Marendaz. I had no previous record of this daughter (only dau. Sarah b. abt. 1859 and son Richard b. abt. 1860)
[Update 17-Jan-2003: Lynne Davis pointed out to me that there is a baptism record for Mary in the IGI, baptised
April 29, 1857, Taibach, Glamorgan. Also (as pointed out by Allen Blethyn) Jenkin Bevan and wife Mary appear in the 1881 census, living in Britton Ferry, together with a visitor Margret L. MARENDAY (sic) U 17 F London, Middlesex, England Rel: Cousin Occ: Drapers Apprentice. So I think this question can be considered as closed]
  7. Rosina Margeretta L, who married Edward John, was believed to have had no children, but on the gravestone where James L (1840-1895) is buried at St Mary's Aberavon, the following is included in the inscription: "Also in loving memory of James Edward Loveluck, son of Edward and Rosina Margaretta John, born 8th Jan (?) and Died 20th of May 1892"
  8. Who is the Thomas D. L. (and wife Doreen F. L) living at Pentitla farm, Margam? Is he a descendent of Thomas L (1837-1917) who previous lived at Pentitla?
  9. The following Lovelucks in a MI from the Abbey Church of St Mary, Margam have not been identified:
    C54 Short Headstone
MARGARET LOVELUCK daughter of HOWELL & MARY died 18-1-1841 aged 1yr. Daughter PRUDENCE LOVELUCK died 1850 aged 4.
  10. Grave B69 St Mary Magdalene, Mawdlam: who are Brenda Amelia Jenkins (d. 16 Oct 1976 aged 72 yrs) and husb. Hugh Ivor Jenkins (d 31 Oct 1981 aged 89 yrs)?
[Update 17-Jan-2003: Lynne Davis pointed out to me that there is a Hugh Jenkins age 8 in the 1901 census in Oldcastle (Bridgend), which fits the age and date of death of Hugh Ivor Jenkins on this gravestone.
In fact, Mary Izod Loveluck (1849-1955) a daughter of John and Catherine Loveluck who are buried in this grave B69, married a David Jenkins, so the Jenkins in this grave are probably from this marriage. What's more, David Jenkins also appears on the 1901 census at Oldcastle on the same page (941542) as Hugh Jenkins. There are also 3 other sons: John age 21, Frederick age 14 and Henry age 10, but no Mary Izod Jenkins]
  11. Grave B110 St Mary Magdalene, Mawdlam: Thomas L is probably Thomas Jones L. (1806-1880) son of Edward L (1774-1832) and Ann Jones (1775-1878). Who are the others? (family of Ann Jones?).
[Update 17-Jan-2003: Lynne Davis pointed out that Thomas Jones L's sister Mary married an Evan John (cf. 1841 census, Pyle). Note also that in the 1851 census Mary and children were listed with the family name Jones instead of John! Her brother Thomas was staying with her, and working on the farm. Here are the details:

    93 032 Pyle Village
    Jones, Mary, HD, W, 42 Farmer (80 acres) E.1.L b. GLA, Margam
Jones, Anne, DA, U, 17 b. GLA, Pyle
Jones, Catherine, DA, U, 15 b. GLA, Pyle
Jones, Jane, DA, 13 b. GLA, Pyle
Jones, Evan, SO, 4, Scholar b. GLA, Pyle
Loveluck, Thomas, BR, U, 44, Farm Servant b. GLA, Margam
Street, Thomas, SV, U, 17 Farm Servant b. GLA, Margam

So maybe the Jones name was carried on through the son Evan Jones? So the Jones' in this grave could be related to Evan Jones/John, son of Evan John and Mary L. The Johns in the grave are almost certainly relatives of Evan John.]
  12. What is the meaning of the phrases in Welsh on the gravestone of Mary & Edward L of Watertown? (St Mary Magdalene, Mawdlam, grave C6)
  13. Grave B42 St Mary Magdalene, Mawdlam: inscription includes Mary Elizabeth Harris, d 1887 aged 1 month. This is no doubt a g. daughter of James (1829-1868) and Mary L, since their dau. Margaret Izod married Samuel HARRIS on 12 Jan 1887
  14. How are the Loveluck-Edwards family related to the Lovelucks?
