Shared note | Gabriel buried in 1816 in Thatcham was aged 78, and was therefore born in 1737/8. A Thomas was buried at Shaw in 1828 aged 90, and therefore was also born in 1737/8. The 1776 Will of Thomas of Shaw refers to sons Thomas and Gabriel (amongst others). Obviously my consequent suggestion is that the men in these two burials are the brothers referred to in the 1776 Will. Gabriel of Thatcham and his wife Elizabeth produced their first child for baptism in 1777, so I further suggest that they are the couple married at Shaw in 1776, not having identified any alternatives yet. This would make Gabriel 38 or 39 at marriage, which may seem too old, but curiously the Thomas that I presume to be his brother married in 1777, making two late marriages. The burning question is, of course, who then is the Elizabeth Lovelock who married Gabriel? I can see no candidate at present, and I suppose her surname could be a mistake on the part of the writer. However, a Bondsman associated with the Marriage Licence Bond of Elizabeth and Gabriel was named Simon Mesenger, according to the data at Find my Past, who may well have been related to Gabriel's mother. |
