George initially served in the Royal Norfolk Regiment and later in the Signals Unit before joining the Royal Warwickshire Regiment where he served on active service in France, Germany and later in Palestine between 1946 and 1947 before discharge in 1948. George was a reservist until the 6th December 1950 and that year emigrated to Australia as an assisted passage migrant aboard the SS Maloja. Most migrants paid Aus $10 for their passage but as a returned serviceman the Australian Government got George for free! George later met Kathleen Ellen Shiels and they married in Brisbane on the 9th September 1960. George became an Australian Citizen on the 7th October 1980. George initially lived in Brisbane, Queensland. He now lives in Canberra, ACT with his wife Kathy and children David, Helen and Catherine. The children now live in the Sydney area.
