Note

James Colley apparently assumed the name of Thomas Brown and died at North Waltham, Hampshire in September 1879. An inquest was carried out as he was found dead in an outhouse of The Sun Inn. A newspaper report of the time, according to Sylvia Ede, referred to the dead man as Thomas Brown true name James Colley proven to be from Wootton Bassett.

Under his assumed name James had married Harriet Hiscocks (nee Church) at Wootton Bassett in August 1869.

He was buried at North Waltham, and the incumbent apparently recorded the burial as of James Colley of Wootton Rivers, again according to Sylvia Ede.

There is no explanation at present for James' assumption of the name of Thomas Brown. Moreover, in the 1871 Census he was recorded with his parents in Wootton Rivers as James Colley, but also with his wife Harriet (recorded as Henrietta) in Wootton Bassett, when, apart from being recorded as Thomas Brown, he claimed to have been born in London, Middlesex and to be a Plasterer's Labourer, as opposed to the Agricultural Labourer born in Wootton Rivers recorded in the Wootton Rivers entry.
