Shared note

RL 27/6/07: Could possibly be the Thomas L ag ed 68 [sic - i.e. implies born 1812/13], born 'Winchester' in the following 1881 entry, (Ancestry and LDS transcriptions){*}:

Newington, Surrey St Saviours Union Infirmary, Westmoreland Road RG11 0550 F28 P23

Among a list of pauper inmates: Thomas Lovelock;Pauper;W;68;General Labourer;Hampshire, Winchester

Possibly Thomas, bap 1817, son of Thomas L and Olive Matton

He was in Winchester, unmarried, in 1851 (aged 35, in Southwell household), but we have not (otherwise) located him in subsequent censuses; nor do we have any data concerning a possible marriage or his death. We do have a Thomas L death in Winchester RD apart from those of Olive's husband and their son (bap and bur 1810) - 4Q 1863 2c 59. This is presently allocated to Thomas son of Thomas L and Mary Childs (bap 10 Aug 1788), who m'd Martha Unknown (Compton tree) and who appears with inconsistent ages in 1841 (52), 1851 (65) and 1861 (73), but he 'should' have been 93 in 1881. Thomas in the 1881 (Newington/"Southwark" entry) being shown as 68 suggests he's probably neither of the Thomas sons of Thomas and Olive. However, the age transcribed as 68 could {I've not viewed an image} be 63; alternatively it could just possibly be 93, in which case this could be Thomas b 1788 (currently progenitor of the Compton tree), with the 1863 death (see above) being that of this Thomas (i.e. bap 1817). However, there's much less of an age discrepancy if Thomas bap 1817 married someone, some time, somewhere and ended up in Newington Infirmary!

{*} I've sometimes referred to the above 1881 entry loosely (and misleadingly?) as "Thomas in Southwark 1881". And in fact Genuki reports: NEWINGTON REGISTRATION DISTRICT Registration County : London. Created : 1.7.1837 (sometimes "St. Mary Newington" in early listings). Abolished : 1.1.1870 (succeeded by St. Saviour Southwark district). The latter was in turn: Abolished : 1.4.1901 (succeeded by Southwark district).

We have, however, captured a Thomas L b Winchester (abt 1801/2) in Southwark (in 1851). GL 16/3/07: "38 Mint Street, ... ... some kind of lodging house, with 45 lodgers. Thomas was recorded as 49 ..., a Widower, a Labourer born in Winchester. Ref RG10 602 F30 P53." RL: "Presumably not the same man, as we assume we've captured Thomas bap Nov 1817 in Winchester in 1851 (albeit with stated age 35) - unless there's an error with one or other age!"
