Thomas Henry Lovelock was born on 29th May 1852 in Pearl St, Trinity Place, Manhattan, New York, USA. He arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on 12th August, 1853 on a convoy of ships from New York. He was aged 15 months. The family lived in Little Bourke St in Melbourne. His brother Charles Wright Lovelock was born here in November 1853. Thomas Henry was a noted saddler, making all kinds of leather items for use on farms, from horse harness down to school bags. He moved from farm to farm in Victoria. He was in Balranald, New South Wales during the 1870s, where he married Kate Pendergast at the E.C. Church, Balranald in 1881. Kate came from the Black Forest, a suburb of Adelaide, in South Australia. Her father was not pleased because Thomas was also a bookmaker and loved and possessed beautiful horses. His horses were generally white and were used to pull beautiful carriages. Tommina Weston of Temora, his niece and Tom Lovelock of Boree Creek, his grandson had samples of his sadlery. After his marriage, Thomas Lovelock took his family to Victoria although Thomas's first son, George was born at Balranald. Thomas worked around many areas of Victoria making and repairing leather work: Picola, Huntly (1885), Mooroopna (1887), Kotupna (1897) and Raywood (1892). Thomas and Kate separated in the early 1900s. Kate kept the children and had a wine place at Picola until 1917 when the family moved to NSW to "Wynola", Boree Creek [near Lockhart], where land was opening up. Her sons Thomas Albert and George Henry ran the farm that they established. Thomas Albert's son William Thomas (Tom) was a young boy at the time and remembers his grandfather Thomas Henry. He worked in a shop in the village - that used to be the post office - where he plied his saddlery trade from 1917.) Thomas Henry owned a white, very stylish horse-drawn outfit, now a "Motor Back" horse drawn vehicle. It had a covered back made of metal, a stylish whip fitted at the front and rubber tyres. Thomas Henry was always a stylish dresser. When the family were living at "Wynola", the children attended the primary school at Faithful. |
