An entry in 'The Morning Advertiser' of 3 Sep 1825 reads 'On Wednesday last, at his house, the Ship and Whale, Russell Street, Commercial Docks, Rotherhithe, after a lingering illness, Mr Joseph Lovelock, aged 46, leaving a widow and three small children, and a large circle of friends, to lament his loss. He was many years a Member, and well-wisher to the Licensed Victuallers' Society.'
