Burial

James: This one: 1874 Jun 11 Martha Lovelock, aged 59 could be Martha nee Yeates, who married David Lovelock on 2 Sep 1839 at Pewsey Robert Sterry: Agreed. Graham Lovelock: I sort of go for this one too, but I wonder why I couldn't find her in the 1861 or 1871 Census Returns? Mind you, I do not know where she was in 1851, but since two of her children were buried (in Burbage) in May 1851 from the Pewsey Workhouse it's a pretty safe bet she was there. I think it was Ken Gigg who suggested to me that Martha Yeates was the Martha Lovelock buried on 15 Jun 1858 in Netheravon, but I do not recall off the top of my head what evidence he had for that.

Note added 29-May-09: In fact, it now seems likely that the above identification was incorrect, and that Martha nee Yeates died 15 Jun 1858, after her second marriage to Henry Keele in 1855. The 1874 burial in question has since been identified as that of Martha Ann Lovelock (nee Kent) in the Wroughton-Tidcombe tree.

Shared note

Found Martha aged 38 in Pewsey Workhouse, born Pewsey together with her children Sarah one month born Burbage; Thomas aged 3 born Burbage; William aged 8 born Burbage and Elizabeth age 5 born Pewsey.

Previously identified burial of Martha Lovelock 11 Jun 1874 at Pewsey as that of Martha Yeates, but Graham Lovelock argues (email 12 Jan 2005) that this is in fact the burial of Martha Ann née Kent:

"However, I can provide an argument for changing the attribution: in the 1871 Census Martha Ann nee Kent is the only Martha in Pewsey, identified by the four sons living with her. Her age is given as 55, so she could have become 56 in April, May or early June, which would make the age at death consistent.

I admit I have no idea what happened to the other Martha. She was a widow in the Workhouse in 1851 of course, and she buried two of her children that year, within 4 days of each other, interestingly in Burbage. However, there is no record in our data of a Martha burial anywhere that fits or of a second marriage that I can find."
