Marriage

It is suspected, James Charles having previously married Kate's sister Hannah, that the rules of consanguinity prevented him from actually marrying Kate, despite the declaration in the 1901 Census Return that they were man and wife. This would also explain why no marriage can be found in the GRO Index.

Shared note

Despite using the surname Lovelock for various Census Returns, for himself, wife and children,  James Charles seems to have married and died as James Charles Cooper, and registered his eight children by Hannah Brown in the name of Cooper. At least two of his daughters used the surname Cooper when they came to be married, showing that they knew what their surname was, regardless of what their father told the Census Enumerators.

Charles was recorded as James C in 1871, aged 25, and therefore born in 1845 or 1846. in 1881 he was 34, born in St Pancras. However, in 1891 he was said to be aged 50, born in Somers Town, which is in St Pancras, and in 1901 aged 59, born in St Pancras. Free BMD has no corresponding birth entry.
