Note | An item in the 'London Evening Standard' of 24 August 1893 reported: 'An inquest was held yesterday by Mr S F Langham on the body of Hannah Lovelock, 69, the wife of a fruit porter, of 4 Collyer's-rents, Southwark. Wm. Henry Lovelock identified the deceased as his wife, and said that on Saturday night he left her at home quite well.Later on, between ten and eleven o'clock,he heard she had been burned and taken to the hospital, where she died on Sunday morning. They had been in the habit of using a paraffin lamp with a glass reservoir, and this he found lying in pieces at the foot of the stairs when he examined the house on the Saturday night. James Mozeley, a staymaker, of 47, Long-lane, Borough, said that on Saturday evening, as he was leaving his shop, he heard screams, and on running to Collyer's-rents saw the deceased enveloped in flames, which a policeman and another man were endeavouring to extinguish, and they were eventually successful, though not before she had been terribly burned. She was lying at the foot of the stairs, and the broken lamp was found underneath her. The police at once took her to the hospital on the ambulance. Dr Edgar Huntley, the house surgeon, said the deceased had been badly burned all over the body, and she died on Sunday morning from shock to the system. Her case was hopeless from the first. Other evidence showed that the deceased was probably going upstairs carrying the lamp, when she stumbled and fell backwards on to it. A verdict of Accidental Death was returned.' |
