Birth

RL 4/05 Added to baptism entry from Watchfield PRs supplied by Helen Norton.

Christening

(From Modern Transcript); supplied (4/05) by Helen Norton in response to RL request - tracking down the Pocock sisters/family.

Census

Helen Norton (24/4/05) supplied the following re. 1891 census entry she located: David, 45; Anna, 45; Thomas H., 19; Eliza, 17; George W., 15; David B., 13; Anna I., 9; Florence E., 6; Harry, 4; Martha A, 4(?)*. Helen reported 'all born Watchfield, except Anna born Breamore'** - i.e. as per 1881 entry.

  • I'm not sure whether the '(?)' is in the original or Helen's. Age 'should' be 11. ** Actually Helen reported 'Braemore' as Anna's birthplace - whose slip?!

Shared note

12/5/05 RL Looking for possible marriage and children. According to Basil Lovelock (my uncle), Harry (the youngest of David and Anna) had a son Wilfred; he recalled the family living in Swindon, probably during the 1930s or later. Found a Harry Pocock marriage to a Rose Ellen Fuller in Bradfield (Berks) 2nd quarter 1902 and the birth of a Wilfred Basil registered in Faringdon RD 1st quarter 1905 (the only Wilfred Pocock birth registration - on FreeBMD at least - for Berkshire or Wiltshire between 1900 and 1930. Further Watchfield PR data from Helen Norton (15/5) has this birth clearly as being to Harry's elder brother David Basil and spouse (qv).

13/5 Realised the above marriage unlikely to be Harry's as he'd only have been 15! Found two other possibilities via FreeBMD: (i) Cricklade, June quarter 1910, vol. 5a, p. "[68]4" (i.e transcriber unsure whether page is 64 or 84 and therefore "no spouse details available"). BMDIndex (via 'The Genealogist') image shows Cricklade 5a p. 84 quite clearly (and they've confirmed as much in response to my query to them ref. FreeBMD); not poss. to find bride thence however, as images are of whole pages for the relevant quarter with entries (of individuals) in alphabetical order. On FreeBMD neither 'possible' page in fact included a Harry Pocock!: p. 84 lists Maskell, Dorothy; Parson (BMDIndex has Parsons), Victor Roland M; Sainsbury, Gertrude F; Sainsbury, Gertrude Ta_itha. (BMDIndex image also has 2xSainsbury, with 'Tabitha' reasonably clear.) p. 64 is in fact for Swindon, not Cricklade, and lists Baughm, Sidney James; Greenwood, Arthur William; Griffiths, Ethel May; Osborne, Martha. So where's Harry Pocock?! Queried all this with FreeBMD - although they say 'firm corrections only'!! No response so far (19/5). (ii) Harry James Pocock, Swindon 1st quarter 1910, vol. 5a, p. 33, but the 'James' obviously makes this unlikely to be our man; bride either Edith Elizabeth Ferris or Louisa Maud Sturt.

19/3/10 RL The 1911 census entry now available [though not without difficulties in terms of transcription!] suggests that Harry's wife's name was Gertrude and thence that the Cricklade marriage entry is indeed much the most likely one. Revisiting FreeBMD reveals that the relevant page number has been corrected to 84, that Harry Pocock's name now appears along with the other four [NB], and that 'Parson' has been amended to 'Parsons'. The 'double' entry as regards Ms Sainsbury remains, however, both in FreeBMD and of course on the actual page image.
