The following transcript of a letter written by Jane Lovelock in 1844 from "The White Hart" Calne to her parents was provided by Colin Alford via email 21 Apr 06. Colin also provided a scanned image of the letter.

TRANSCRIPT OF LETTER FOUND IN THE OLD OVEN 1962, DURING THE MODERNISATION OF :

"CUKOOS KNOB" 38, WOOTTEN RIVERS, MARLBOROUGH WILTS.

DEAR MOTHER & FATHER, I HOPE THIS WILL FIND YOU ALL WELL AS IT LEAVES ME AT PRESENT, THANK GOD FOR IT DEAR MOTHER. GIVE MY LOVE TO MARTHA JANE, AND I HOPE YOU WILL ALL ACCEPT THE SAME. I WANT TO KNOW IF MATILDA IS AT HOME OR NOT, AND WOULD YOU HAVE HEARD FROM REBECCA OR NOT DEAR MOTHER. PLEAS~TO ASK JOHN AND MATILDA TO WRITE ME A FEW LINES BACK IF THEY PLEASE, FOR I WANT TO KNOW HOW YOU ALL ARE. YOU MUST DIRECT MY LETTERS MR. BLADEN, WHITE HEART INN, FOR THE LAST LETTER YOU SENT ME WAS DIRECTED MR. BLADEN CALNE AND IT WENT WRONGLY. FOR MY MASTER HAS A BROTHER IN THE TOWN, AND IT WILL GO THERE IF YOU DO NOT PUT THE WHITE HEART ON IT. THE NEXT LETTER I WRITE TO YOU WILL BE FOR SOME OF YOU TO COME, AND THAT WILL BE IN A MONTH, OR THREE WEEKS IF IT PLEASE GOD. GIVE MY LOVE TO ALL MY FRIENDS FOR I CANNOT SAY ANY MORE NOW.

JANE LOVELOCK CALNE

4-Jun-06: Note that Martha Jane mentioned in the letter could be an illegitimate daughter of Jane - see the 1851 census entry for Jane's parents.

No Jane Woodward in Calne, but a James and Sarah Woodward were in Bremhill with his mother, so this looks like the lady in question.

So entered marriage to Joseph Nicholls and supporting census record.
