Note

George seems to have enlisted in the Royal Navy on 15 Aug 1870 for a period of 10 years. His service record at Ancestry.co.uk (Ref: ADM/188/49) gives his Date of Birth as 15 Aug 1852 and Place of Birth as Bedwin, Wilts, but there is no matching GRO birth entry. On the other hand George does not appear in the 1871 Census, which is consistent with the enlistment details. He served on a number of ships, and in what seem to be some shore establishments, ending his service on 15 Aug 1880 in 'M (or N) Barracks', the location of which is not given.
