Royal Field Artillery, (R.H. & R.F.A.).

From Army Form Z.21 Attested: 12 Dec 1915 Called up: 11 Apr 1916 Xfrd to Reserve: 15 Oct 1919, (Demobbed at Woolwich). Army No. 124077 Rank: Driver,(of horse drawn field gun). R.H. & R.F.A. Records: Z161929

From Army Form Z.11 From Army Form Z.18 Unit: 56(R) Bty "A First Class Driver and Horseman". Theatre of War: Eastern, (Egypt). Trade before Enlistment: Carman Group 33

He was the driver of a team of 6 horses that pulled the field guns into position, i.e. as now seen when twenty-one gun salutes are fired and at military tattoos. He told me that he received Field Punishment in Egypt of being tied to the gun wheel throughout the day for insubordination. He was the Driver of No. 2 Gun and they were moving to a different location, the team in front of him, (No. 1 Gun), had some trouble and had to stop, the rest were told to drive on. When he arrived at the new location the officer there said "No. 1 Gun"! Dad corrected him with, "No. No.2 Gun Sir". Result - Field Punishment! P.B.L.
