Note: Graham identifies the following burial at Pewsey: 1874 Jun 11 Martha Lovelock, aged 59 as that of Martha Ann née Kent (b abt. 1817), who mar. Thomas L at Pewsey 1 Jan 1846. We had previously identified this burial as that of Martha née Yeates (b. abt 1813) who mar. David Lovelock at Pewsey 2 Sep 1839. email message from Graham 12 Jan 2005: "However, I can provide an argument for changing the attribution: in the 1871 Census Martha Ann nee Kent is the only Martha in Pewsey, identified by the four sons living with her. Her age is given as 55, so she could have become 56 in April, May or early June, which would make the age at death consistent. I admit I have no idea what happened to the other Martha. She was a widow in the Workhouse in 1851 of course, and she buried two of her children that year, within 4 days of each other, interestingly in Burbage. However, there is no record in our data of a Martha burial anywhere that fits or of a second marriage that I can find."

Note

And what started out as a real puzzler to be going on with. In the 1901 Census I found a family going under the surname of Loselock at Great Faringdon in Berkshire. Use of Free BMD and various of our data on the website enables me to put together the following. Only the 1901 Census has the Loselock epithet, every other entry in Free BMD and our data that I have found is rendered as Lovelock. George's occupation of Tailor recorded in 1901 is a great help, and in 1881, aged 26, born Pewsey, we find him as a Visitor in the house of James and Ann Mills, at St Katharines, Bedwyn Common, occupation Tailor. In passing let me note that this couple appear in the LL - she is the daughter of William L and Elizabeth (nee Hooper). How interesting that George should visit a house where the lady of the house's maiden name is also Lovelock. One incidental matter of note was that although the birthplaces of James and Ann Mills and their three children were all entered as GB, George retained his Pewsey origin, suggesting he had no doubts about where he was born. Also incidentally, the 1901 Census renders Pewsey for George as 'Peevsey'.
