| Note | A report concerning Charlotte appeared in the 'Northern Weekly Gazette' of 5 Jun 1880: "There seems to be serious danger to children in swinging - at least, too much of it. One Charlotte Lovelock, ten years of age, a short time since went on a visit to her grandmother and amused herself while there by swinging for an unusual length of time. She afterwards grew unwell, and died on Sunday last. Death was the result of peritonitis, and had, according to the medical attendant, been caused by incessant swinging, the movement of the legs and body inducing the injury which brought on death. A verdict in accordance with this testimony was returned, the Coroner remarking that he had never had a similar case before him, though he could quite understand that fatal results might attend constant swinging." |
