Shared note

We will probably never know why at his marriage John named his father as John rather than William. One theory is that because William died when John was only 2 he never knew his father and when asked for the name he made one up rather than appear illegitimate by saying 'Don't know'.

There is also no obvious explanation for why his birthplace is recorded as somewhere in Berkshire in 1871, 1881 and 1891. However, taking the 1901 and 1911 Census Returns into account there seems little doubt that all 5 census entries refer to the same man.
