Note

Vicki Houlbrooke provided the following information in an e-Mail of 8 Sep 2011:

On 12 Jul 1842 Henry was tried and sentenced at Portsmouth. He broke a shop window and was charged with highway robbery (I do not know if he actually stole anything). Henry was described as 22 years of age, was 5 feet 5 1/2 inches tall, could read and write, was not married, religion: Protestant, in good health, occupation: Tanner for 6 years.

Henry was transported to Tasmania on H.M.S. Anson which departed Southampton 01 Oct 1843 and arrived Hobart Town, Tasmania 04 Feb 1844, Captain was Coglin and the Surgeon Andrew Millar M.D., 227 convicts. The only cabin passenger was Captain Croft of 58th regiment and non-paying convict school master, Peter John Jarbot and his new wife, Emma.

H.M.S. Anson was originally a 74 gun frigate converted to a convict ship at a cost of 12,309 pounds and only made one voyage as a convict ship. It was converted for use as a women's prison and moored in the Derwent River. Early in 1851 the Anson was demolished and the women prisoners moved to the Cascades.

Henry worked for Mr. Ryan 5 Feb 1848 - 19 Aug 1848. Gained his 'ticket of leave' (parole).

According to the Salisbury and Winchester Journal of 10 June 1843 Henry Lovelock and William Cook were committed to the Gaol (presumably Winchester Prison) for stealing a watch, the property of William Hoare, at Vernham's Deane.

Note

Dianne Snowden provided the following information in an e-Mail of 9 Sep 2011:

Henry Lovelock, transported to Van Diemen's Land was the son of Stephen and Mary (according to his convict indent). He had 4 brothers: John, William, George and Joshua, at his Native Place (Vernham's Dean, Hants). Henry was a tanner (six years). Tried Portsmouth 13 July 1842 for highway robbery; transported for 15 years; age 22. Arrived 4 Feb 1844 on HMS Anson. Indent ref: TAHO, CON14/1/25
