Note | From Jack Ballard, via Graham Wright (graham_suewright@1queensborough.freeserve.co.uk) His history was compiled by Jack Ballard who wrote an article on him in 1995. Below are relevant aspects: John initially worked as a farm labourer in Wiltshire. He joined the army when he was about 18 and entered the 3rd battalion Wiltshire regiment. In 1882, he was stationed at Devizes . He was quickly promoted to sergeant in 1886. At this time he had moved from Aldershot to St Peters Depot in Jersey in the Channel Islands. Whilst still in the army he became an acting school teacher in Jersey. Also in Jersey he met and married a local girl called Elizabeth Norris the daughter of the local baker. [Note, initially had butcher; corrected by Graham Wright in email 8 Feb 06] They were, however, married in the register office in Highworth, Wiltshire. John and wife moved on to Athlone and on 9th November 1888 he was promoted to Sergeant Instructor of Musketry. It was in Athlone that his first child was born. Her name was Constance (Nancy) Alice. He was stationed in Southern Ireland from 1887-1893. In 1895 he set sail for the East Indies under the command of General Kitchener of Khartoum. He retired as 1st Sergeant Major in 1910. However he rejoined for the Great War in 1914? and was a Captain Quarter Master in the 6th Service Battalion of the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. He was awarded the Military Cross on 28 December 1914. He fought in France and Belgium until 1918. It is not known when he retired again but it was thought to be 1920. He was a very stern man as was to be expected from his army discipline. He eventually left his wife and went to live with a Mrs Eilert. |
