| Note | Emma left home at age 13 to 'go into service' as a domestic servant. She became pregnant, probably to the son of the household she was working for. Her family disowned her, and she ended up having her twins in the Union Workhouse at Chippenham. One was still born, the other, christened Fred, was taken in and brought up by Emma's parents. Emma's first formal husband, Frederick Newman, was a widower who chose her from a line-up in the Workhouse, and offered to get her out of there by paying off her debts if she would marry him. Emma had several children by him, names unknown. |
