Note | Matilda's birth certificate shows her born 3 December 1897. She always claimed that Maud Matthews (who registered the birth in December 1897) had a misunderstanding with the registrar, which lead to the wrong month being recorded. She celebrated her birthday on 3rd November. Matilda left school at age 13 and went to work as a 'parlour maid' to a family called Harris, just outside Calne, Wilts. World War one rescued her. She was able to get a job in Calne (Still working indirectly for the Harrises) packing sausages into cans for use by the military. It was in the factory she met Bob Syms, who was apprentice carpenter and joiner with C.Syms and sons (the Gaffer's firm), who were extending the factory. He was 16, she was 21. To start with she refused to have anything to do with one so young. Eventually she relented. The rest is history. |
