Marriage | James Lovelock — View this family 30 October 1872 (Age 26 years) Note: Note: In an e-mail dated 14-Oct-2005 Robin Lovelock noted the family of James Lovelock (born Pewsey abt 1847) and Eunice living in Chelsea in the 1901 census and suggested that this James Lovelock might be the son (born 1848, bap 14 Sep 1856 at Pewsey) of Maurice Lovelock and Louisa Stone. However, the 1861 census data for the latter family indicates that that James Lovelock was born in Hull, and there is in fact a FreeBMD record of his birth in Sculcoates RD (in the Hull area) 2Q 1848 (ref 22, 547), whereas the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census records for James and Eunice Lovelock and family state that Eunice's husband was born at Pewsey, Wilts.

However the GRO Online Index of Births introduced in 2016 enables us to confirm Sarah's mother's maiden name as Smith, and that she was born in the same Registration District as her sister Norah. However, Eunice also declared in 1911 that 7 of her 10 children had died. We can identify 7 who had died, but they do not include Sarah, and yet she does not appear in any Census Return, nor does there seem to be any record of her death.

John Richard and Mary Ann, who were born and died in the same Registration District as James William (1875) and George William (1881), are presumed to be two of the 10. There is nothing to indicate when between the end of 1881 (when George William was born in Tettenhalll) and the Jul-Sep quarter of 1884 (when Norah Eunice was born in Pimlico) James and Eunice moved to London, although there are no unaccounted-for births in Staffordshire in that time. |
Note | Robin Lovelock searched for a GRO birth record for Eunice Smith, but the search was not conclusive: From Robin 21-Dec-05:"You'll recall that puzzling around Notts/Nutts [re. the 1901 entry] I'd found an 'alternative' Exton in Rutland (nr Oakham) via Genuki, and I've now found Oakham's actually the relevant RD. The 1881 seems to confirm that as Eunice's birthplace, and in 1846/47. I previously found only one Eunice Smith birth anywhere in 1846 (even using BMDIndex - FreeBMD indicates some gaps in coverage for the year) - 4Q in Eton vol 6 p 393. Further efforts now, re. 1847. FreeBMD has no Eunice Smith birth registered in Rutland in 1847; there's one in Cirencester March 1847 and another in Dewsbury in Sept 1848. I've searched every quarter of 1847 on BMDIndex - several pages of E Smiths in each case ...... - with no joy." It could be that Eunice had married previously, but Robin wasn't able to find a plausible event to confirm this. |
