| Note | An article in 'The West London Observer' of 30 Mar 1945 reads: 'It is announced that the Military Medal has been awarded to Gunner, Frederick Arthur John Lovelock, Royal Artillery, of Fulham, for services in North-West Europe. The citation states: "Gunner Lovelock was a member of an observation post party detailed to support the attack of the Welch Regiment on Reusel during the night of 25/26 September, 1944. The party entered Reusel on the morning of 26th September in order to establish an observation post, but the carrier in which Gunner Lovelock was travelling struck a mine, the driver being fatally wounded and Gunner Lovelock himself severely shaken. He quickly repaired the wireless set and re-established communications, thereby largely contributing to the repulse of an enemy counter-attack, which took place about that time. Although the road on which the blown-up carrier was situated was under mortar and small arms fire, Gunner Lovelock did not leave his set to take shelter until the counter-attack had been repulsed and until ordered by his troop commander. Throughout the day Gunner Lovelock maintained communications between his set and the battery, in spite of frequently being exposed to small arms and mortar fire. His courage and devotion to duty were to a great extent responsible for the fact that unbroken artillery support was possible for the Welch Regiment throughout the day."' |
