Name | Despite this daughter of George and Martha appearing in Census entries as 'Sarah' the birth of Leah Mary is the only one where the mother's maiden name was Harding. At her marriage Leah named her father as George Lovelock (deceased). |
Shared note | RL 16/7/07: We can find no firm information about her apart from the two census entries: the 1851 has her as 'plain' Sarah, b Middx, Kensington; the 1861 as Sarah M, b Middlesex, London - the stated ages are consistent and imply she was born 1844/5. (See note to birth for some [unlikely!] GRO birth registrations.) I'd found the following possible marriage entry (obviously a long shot given our other difficulties locating her after 1861): Kensington 3Q 1872, ref 1a 430 Bristow, William Cottle, Alfred Henry Cottle, Henry Alfred Jackon, Ann Jackson, Ann Lovelock, Sarah However, Graham (9/7/07) then located the following 1881 entry, which seems to 'account for' the possible marriage among the above which would be of primary interest (although if Sarah's age is correct she married very young, with George jnr apparently not the reason): (1881) London, Middx 33 Elgin Crescent, RG11 42 F68 P34 George Lovelock;Head;29;Glazier;Surrey, Kingston Henry Cottle;Brother [sic];26;Smith;Middx, Kensington Sarah Cottle;Wife;25;Middx, Kensington George Cottle;Son;6;Middx Kensington Henry Cottle;Son;3;Middx Kensington GL Note 21-Mar-2020: The married couple above belong to the Ropley, Crondall and Dogmersfield Tree (qv). Graham reported that Ancestry in fact has George L indexed as George Cottle! Also (GL 9/7/07): "I can't identify George at all ... ... I haven't been able to find him in any other census, except: (1891) Kensington, Middx 8 St Geor Rd [sic], RG12 25 F67 P28 George Lovelock;Head;40;Glazier;Surrey, Kingston Elizabeth Lovelock;Wife;35;Paddington George H Lovelock;Son;9;Kensington Elizabeth Lovelock;Daur;5;Kensington [GL ctd]: A George L married an Elizabeth Walker in the Fulham RD in 2Q 1881, ref 1a 407. I presume from the 1881 entry that the Enumerator meant that George and Henry (snr) were Brothers-in-law, meaning we have a Sarah L born in Kensington in 1855/6, NOT 1844/5 as required. But if she's the sister of George ... ... oh goodness! TWO Sarah's from Kensington, neither of whom appears in FreeBMD! Or have I missed something again?" RL (16/7): The following additional GRO births of Sarah Ls might be relevant: Staines 1Q 1848, ref 3 395 (Sarah Elizabeth) St Saviour 4Q 1848, ref 4 451 {Brentford 3Q 1850, ref 3 4 (Sarah Maria) - I think she's a Compton tree child and that the following entry records her early death: Sarah Maria L - Brentford RD 2Q 1852, ref 3a 51 (GRO Online Index of Deaths gives an age of 1} St Pancras 1Q 1851, ref 1, 389 (Elizabeth Sarah) Wandsworth 3Q 1853, ref 1d 362 Lambeth 3Q 1854, ref 1d 268 (Caroline Sarah) Bermondsey 4Q 1856, ref 1d 81 (Sarah Ann) Bethnal Green 3Q 1858, ref 1c 225 I [RL] in turn located another Sarah L in 1851 (see following entry) [see also general note to the present Sarah M's brother Henry], and because of the other members of her family group I thought at first [miscalculating ages and dates I later realised!] that she might be of interest ref. the two entries immediately above: Kensington, Middlesex Wrights Lane, 3 Westside, HO107 1468 F187 P25 Thomas Lovelock;Head;M;40;Cab Proprietor master 3 men;Berks, Burvil [sic] Mary A Lovelock;Wife;M;40;;Wilts, Wroughton Rosana Lovelock;Daur;;14;;Wilts, Wroughton George Lovelock;Son;;12>;Scholar;Wilts, Wroughton James Lovelock;Son;;10;Scholar;Middlex, Kensington Sarah Lovelock;Daur;;8;Scholar;Middlex, Kensington John Lovelock;Son;;6;Scholar;Middlex, Kensington Lucy Lovelock;Daur;;3;;Middlex, Kensington Joseph Lovelock;Son;;1;;Middlex, Kensington Henry Card;Visitor;U;30;Ostler;Wilts, Wroughton William Hetton;Visitor;U;49;Annuitant;Cumberland, Carlisle (This entry is already on the website; above is my [RL] transcription, indicating some minor variations. Graham suggests, convincingly, that 'Burvil' was actually Burghfield, near Reading.) Sarah L aged 8 here was thus another of that name born in Kensington in the mid C19th - 1842/3 if the age entered is accurate. Amazingly, given our problems finding GRO entries for Sarah Ls said to have been born in Kensington, one of the entries cited in the list recorded in a note to the present> Sarah's birth seems to 'fit': Kensington RD 4Q 1842, ref 3, 247[?]. And if that was the dob of the Sarah L in the 1851 Wrights Lane entry above, she'd have been 38 in 1881, so not really a possible for the Sarah L who married Henry Cottle unless one or both stated ages (1851 or 1881) was 'well out'. She does have a brother George 4 years her senior, but he was born in Wroughton rather than Kingston, so in the immediate context this is a red herring! A very quick glance at the Wroughton/Tidcombe tree (and the Lyneham Line) revealed neither this family as such, nor a Thomas L born Wroughton abt 1810 to whom a wife and children might be attached. However, Graham reported (16/7 21:10pm) finding Thomas, Mary A[nn] and family in 1841 and 1861 (to add to the 1851 entry above), and further tentatively confirmed "the Wroughton connection", via a GRO record for son George's birth in 3Q 1838 in Swindon &c RD, ref 8 319. 15/8/07: Graham circulated (24/7) a quite substantial tree developed from the foregoing initial foray. Some residual puzzles notwithstanding (see also my email 15/8), there are good reasons for believing that this Thomas was the son of James L who married Lucy Doer at Burghfield on 2 Nov 1812, and was baptised there on 27 June 1813, while James and Lucy had 3 further children baptised in Hungerford 1816/21 ('Lovelocks in Berks by Parish' on website). James was in turn the son of John L and Sarah Dore at the head of the 'Hungerford - Shalbourne tree' (presently in 'Work in Progress' on the website); he was baptised in Hungerford on 28 July 1771. Lucy remarried Thomas Spicer in Hungerford on Jan 3 1825; the PR marriage entry shows her as widowed. |
