Birth | June 1809 30 21 Source: 1851 British Census Source: 1861 British Census Shared note: RL 19/6/07: In 1851 and 1861 census entries his age was stated as 41 and 53 respectively, suggesting birth between 1807 and 1810. However (Graham 16/3/07), his younger brother Thomas was baptised in July 1810 so George could hardly have been born later than mid-1809. Given the date of his parents' wedding (30 Nov 1807) 1807/9 is perhaps a best estimate. No PR baptism record has been identified.

Shared note: RL 16/7/07: Place and date of birth initially from the 1861 census. See comment to GRO birth data ref. stated age "2 months" [?] in 1851.

Marriage | From RL email 2/7/06: A St George Hanover Square marriage 2Q 1843 could possibly be that of this George L, except no Martha appears (see General Note). However, there is a Mary, a Mary Sophia and a Matilda; also all other George L marriages on FreeBMD 1837/50 (several of them known to us) similarly lack a record of a Martha. There is also another St George Hanover Square marriage with a George L, 1Q 1846, 1 50; again no Martha, but a Charlotte Maria, a Charlotte Mary and a Mary Jane! |

Shared note | The following note was transferred from the previous HTML version of the tree: "There is no proof as yet of George being a son of Thomas and Olive. However, he was living next door to their son John in 1861, and was born in Winchester [between 1807 and 1809]. Considering that George's children were born in London, from the 1861 census, George may have been the one who married at St George Hanover Square in 2Q 1843, ref 1 58. However, the FreeBMD entry does not list a Martha (as named in the 1851 census entry) as the potential spouse." RL 16/7/06: There's a George L death in Kensington RD 2Q 1864, ref 1a 51. We've not found George in 1871 so he could be the subject of this entry - and the only George L in Kensington in 1861 according to the S&N census index was aged 6. (See also my speculation concerning Martha's possible death in Kensington before 1861.) Chelsea Pensioner records show that George enlisted on 14 Jan 1825 and was discharged on 6 Apr 1857. George reached the rank of Sergeant, and saw service in Canada. He was tried and convicted three times by Courts Martial, for absence without leave, desertion, and desertion and disgraceful conduct. At his discharge it was noted that he suffered from impaired constitution from age and service. |
