Note: Regarding Martha's identity: We have long believed that Thomas and Martha were the couple Thomas Lovelock and Martha Stevens (a widow) who married in South Stoneham on 13 Nov 1836. The Parish data at Findmypast now suggests that Martha was probably the Martha Stacey who married George Stevens in St Faith, Winchester on 18 May 1795, and that Martha Stacey was baptised in St Michael, Winchester on 28 Dec 1776, the daughter of Abraham and Martha Stacey.

Note

24 October 2009

Jim Martin acquired a certificate for the marriage on 8 April 1849 of Charles Lovelock and Sarah Stops which indicated that the groom's father was named Thomas, not John as previously shown in this tree. The marriage had previously been identified as being that of Charles Lovelock baptised at Compton 17 Aug 1820, son of John Lovelock and Mary (nee Pain). Robin Lovelock located Winchester PR baptism entries for several children of a Thomas and Mary Lovelock, including a Charles bap 24 May 1818, plus an appropriate marriage entry for the couple, Mary having been named Elkins, and a burial record for Mary in 1820. This family had not previously been identified, but on the basis of a range of other data we believe Thomas Lovelock to have been already known to us as bap Compton 10 Aug 1788 and appearing in 1841 and 1851 census extracts with a wife Martha; no definitive marriage entry for Thomas and Martha has been found; no children have been identified for that union. Mary nee Elkins has therefore been added as the first wife of Thomas L bap 1788, together with several children. With the exception of his baptism and an 1841 census entry clearly including him as the son of John and Mary (nee Pain), all data previously associated with Charles bap 1820 (I216) has been reallocated to Charles bap 1818 son of Thomas and Mary, including all data associated with his wife Sarah and their descendants.
