Shared note

The following notes were provided by his grandson John Lovelock in 2007.

His father was a journeyman butcher so it is likely that he moved several times before joining the Army. In the Census of 1881 William was living with his parents at 201 Southampton Street in Reading. The house is still there. In the 1891 Census his parents were living at 35 Station Road Twyford Berkshire but William was not living there. It is likely that by this stage at the age of 18 he had joined the Army Service Corps and been posted to Ireland.

Served in Army Service Corps, probably the mounted section. He was a Staff Sergeant.

He was living at Percy Cottages just outside the Army base in Athlone when his son George William was born in May 1897. Most of these cottages are still standing but it is unclear which cottage was where George William was born.

When Fred was born in February 1899 he was living at 110 South Hill Gardens, Grays Hill, Henley on Thames. Williams father, George, was living in the town and opened a butchers shop at 5 Friday Street shortly afterwards.

In the 1901 Census William and Mary are back in England. William at Aldershot Barracks and Mary was living at 28 Manitoba Terrace, Harpsden Road Henley-on-Thames Oxfordshire with his father and brother Fred. Frank was born at Manitoba Terrace in September that year.

By 1903 they were back in Ireland as Ernest and Joseph were born in Kildare and Newbridge, County Kildare in 1903 and 1905. On both occasions William gives his occupation as Cook.

By 1913 they were back in England as a letter dated 27th January 1913 gives his address as 4 Morley Villas, Barrack Path St Johns Woking Surrey. He presumably left the Army about this time.

On the 28th August 1914 he signed up as an Army Reservist with the Army Service Corps. He gave his address as 207 Church Street Woking and occupation as an Insurance Agent. 207 Church Street was demolished as part of Woking Town Centre redevelopment in the 1960's.

The Army record shows that William served abroad in France with the Expeditionary Force (ASC 81st Army) between September and December 1914 and thereafter at 'home' until June 1915 when he was discharged at Woolwich Dockyard.

Upon discharge he moved to 100 Chapter Road Willesden Green London NW2 and appears at this address in Kelly's Directory between 1915 and 1922. At his son George William''s wedding in November 1921 he gave his occupation as a butcher.

By August 1922 William and Mary had moved to 64 Twybridge Way Stonebridge Park and at Fred's marriage in 1923 gave his occupation as a Hairdresser.

At the time of his death on the 31st August 1924 he was 50 years old and a Manager of a Ham and Beef Stores. William died at Twyford Lodge in Acton Lane which at the time was part of Park Royal Hospital later Central Middlesex. He was buried in a common grave at St Mary's Catholic Cemetery Harrow Road Kensal Green London NW10 on the 4th September 1924.

At the end of the war he was awarded the 1914 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. He was appointed as a Lance Corporal and discharged as a Company Quarter Master Sergeant.
