Also listed similarly in Mercer & Crocker's Directory for Oxon, Berks, Wilts, Hants, Dorset and Isle of Wight 1873. Oxford Chronicle 26th Sept 1874 WALLINGFORD SUDDEN DEATH OF MR F. FRANCIS - Quite a gloom has been thrown over this town by the melancholy death of Mr. Frederick Francis, brewer and managing clerk to Messrs. Hilliard, brewers. The deceased, who was about 51 years of age, was well known and much respected, and by the members of the Odd Fellows' Society he will be much missed, as he at all times took an active interest in the affairs of the Lodge, and up to the time of his death held the post of Noble Grand. Some 18 years ago the deceased had a serious attack of illness, but since then he has been in the enjoyment of good health, and on Monday evening last went with his wife for a walk to Crowmarsh, nearly half a mile, and on the way called at the shop of Mr. Maynard in High Street, where he purchased and paid for some fish, and on his way home, about half an hour after, he complained to his wife, when in the Market Place, of feeling unwell, and they went into the Mermaid Inn, and immediately on entering the house he staggered against the wall and appeared insensible. He was assisted to a chair, and before medical aid arrived be died. An inquest was held on the body of the deceased, at the " Mermaid", on Tuesday last before A. D. Bartlett, Esq., county coroner. - William Maynard, corn dealer and fishmonger, said - I have known deceased many years, and be has been as far as I know a healthy man. Last evening he came to my shop about 7 o'clock and ordered 6d. worth of bloaters. He was then apparently in good health. He left my shop and went towards the Bridge. In about half-an-hour I saw him returning on the opposite side of the street on his way home. About ten minutes afterwards he was dead. When he passed he was walking along as usual, and his wife was about ten yards behind him. - Henry Lovelock, landlord of "The Mermaid" said - I have known deceased many years, and have been in the habit of often seeing him. He was a man that enjoyed good health and I never heard of his having any illness or having met with any accident. Yesterday evening about half-past 7, I was in the taproom of this house, and some one came to the front door and pushed it open sharply and screamed out. I went directly, and at the door I saw the deceased and his wife. She had hold of the his arm, and he reeled back against the wall and said - "Fetch the doctor, and fetch some brandy". I led him, with the assistance of his wife, into the room, and placed him on a chair. He did not speak after he was in the chair. I got some brandy but he was then insensible and could not drink it. I went off for the doctor, and before I returned he was dead. I have no reason whatever suppose he had received any previous injury or met with any accident. His wife was with him when he died. - Verdict - "Sudden death by the visitation of God." |
